One question that I get asked by friends and clients is how do you choose the right size rug for your space? Another BIG question I get asked a million times, is “Do you put a rug over carpet”? They get a resounding yes!!! It ties the room together so that your furniture isn’t just floating in space. Rugs are a very important part of bringing a space together, and making the space feel put together, and cozy. I have learned that over the years going bigger is better majority of the time. A lot of the times choosing between a 5×8, and a 8×10 can make the price jump significantly. I’ll be honest this is one of the biggest things that keeps people from getting the right size rug.
Choosing The Right Size…..
I have been victim to the wrong size rug before, and thought maybe a 5×8, will work out, then an 8×10 does a much better job! Your are definitely NOT alone if you have chosen a too small of a rug. Even the great Joanna Gaines has fallen “death by too small of a rug“!!
If you look at this rug here, this death by too small of a rug. Even the wonderous Joanna Gaines knows that this space needs an 8×10 to pull all this together. The chairs do NOT need to be all the way on the rug either. They only need to have the front two legs on the chairs, and that will pull it together. Believe me we have all made this terrible mistake, or been warned.
In this space you could fill up an entire room with an 8×10 rug. This would make this room so much more cozier too! Don’t get me wrong this room is pretty darn amazing already folks. This rug does NOT give it any justice.
This gives you a great idea on how to use rugs under furniture, and what works best or the type of layout you want. Rugs can be very tricky when you jump from one size to another. I actually loved using this as a guide when choosing size, and placement.
What Great Rugs Placement Looks Like….
Now this rug looks great under this sectional, and renders a cozy feel too! This is a very nice 8×10. Even rugs have to be chosen correctly for the front door area too. Check out this rug HERE.
I see this over and over, a rug that is too small even for the front door. I know that it is very hard to find rugs for the front door area, and they look right for the outside area. This area would be nicer if it was a rug that reaches the entire door area. This would include the side lights, and burlap rugs are even greater for outdoors.
These areas can be tricky when trying to find the right size rug. I suggest that you may want to tape off the area first to see what the rug may look like for this space. I have definitely done this before, and it has worked wonders for us.
This kitchen table set up gives this table the best look for the size, and who doesn’t love JUTE rugs!! Here is my favorite jute rug HERE.
I just purchased this rug here for guess what, $69 and I am so giddy about this price. This is an 8×10, and its normal price was $279. plus tax. I lucked up on this buy here from Home Depot. I waited and waited for a rug for this space. We have only been here since December, but I told hubby I would wait, and look what fell in my lap. I guess good things do come to those who wait. As, you can see my big guy is taking in a nap in my photo. LOL…
