If you’re planning a trip to Austin, don’t miss exploring the iconic South Congress Avenue—and especially the must-visit South Congress Café! My husband and I recently had a rare kid-free weekend (4 boys, so you know how special that is!) and decided to soak in everything Austin has to offer. We checked into a cozy hotel, left our worries behind, and spent a lazy day lounging, indulging in cable TV, and enjoying a leisurely hotel breakfast.
But the real highlight of our trip was discovering South Congress Café, a charming spot that perfectly captures Austin’s urban, unique vibe. From its eclectic decor to its delicious menu, this café was an absolute standout. We also made time for other local favorites, like Gourdough’s Gourmet Donuts and Coolhaus Ice Cream Sandwiches, but South Congress Café truly stole the show. Whether you’re an Austin local or visiting for the first time, this gem is a must for your itinerary!
Look at how cute!! This little spot is on a very busy street and you will have to keep on the lookout for parking. We actually came in at a good time because there was no crowd at all. They have a happy hour from 3-6 during the weekday which renders you half price appetizers, and cocktails. Mr. JW and I decided to sit at a booth, and chit chat about the rest of our stay in Austin. Our waiter was very helpful, and helped us make great menu choices for the evening. If you are ever in the area ask for Austin to see if he is in the building. South Congress Cafe is so neat and adorable I promise you will fall in love. We decided on a couple dishes to split, and that is usually our norm due to the fact that I am such a small eater. First, up we ordered a“Warm Goat Cheese Salad”, and it was followed by something that is definitely off of our radar.
Here is that yummy salad that we chose to put blackened chicken on , and OMG it was sooooooo freaking gooood!!! I mean really who doesn’t love warm goat cheese on this divine salad. South Congress Cafe did not disappoint at all, and thank you so much Austin for the recommendation sir.
Now tell me folks doesn’t that look so good?? I love Austin because of the diversity that it brings to the culture of Austin, and it has some of the coolest spots for kids but NOT on this trip folks. (LOL)!!!
Okay, it may not look like it is the yummiest dish by your eyes, but OMG this was soooooo good!! This was our main course called Beef Milanesa which I am so happy we decided to try it. This does look like something off of “The Flinstones”, so just consider me a carnivore for this round. The beef was so flavorful, and tender you did not need a knife to cut it at all. This was a learning experience for Mr. JW into which foods to order, and just what is all the proper names for all of these great dishes. I love showing him, taking him, and being apart of his experience because these are many firsts that we talk about in our relationship. South Congress Cafedoes a great job the moment you step in the door. Before we decided to head back to our hotel room we decided to go to my favorite spot Gourdough’s Gourmet Donuts.
This place is so freaking good, and they make your donuts HOT on the spot for you. They have 3 locations here in Austin, and 2 are outdoors, 1 indoor. We don’t mind the food truck scene it makes the visit all the more worthwhile, and its just all out “NEAT”!!
Mr. JW and I always get different things so that we can try each other’s food choice. I can not tell you enough about “Blue Balls”, and “Miss Shortcake”, so freaking gooood!!!
This is me waiting patiently for my HOT donuts, and man I am waiting too! This is the food truck site and here are a few pics of the area that you will see when you drive up.
This taco spot was sitting right next to the donut truck. We haven’t had any of their items yet I go based off of reviews not sure if that is good or bad yet.
He hates me taking his picture but I love this guy so much!! I also love spending this time with him too!
Espadrilles for the win, and they gave me such great comfort too. Well, there are more things that we have up our sleeves this summer, but until then we will keep you posted on our whereabouts. The fourth of July is coming soon, and I will be sharing some recipes on the blog that are kid friendly, and are fun to make in no time! Hopefully, you guys get a chance to get to the South Congress Cafe, and Gourdough’s Gourmet Donuts... If you do let me know what you think?
